Who can register to vote?
To register in Nebraska you must:
- be a citizen of the United States
- be a resident of Nebraska and of the county where you are registering; if you move to another county, you must re-register
- be at least 18 years of age or will be 18 years of age on or before the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November
- not be convicted of a felony and currently serving a sentence, either in Nebraska or another state or in federal court (your voting rights are restored upon completing your sentence, including any probation or parole term)
- not have been officially found to be mentally incompetent
Can I register to vote online?
- Nebraska offers online voter registration.
- You should know: you need a valid Nebraska State ID or Driver’s License to use Nebraska's online voter registration system. If you don’t have a Nebraska-issued ID, you can still submit a voter registration application by mail or in person.
Can I submit voter registration forms by mail?
Use the National Voter Registration Form
- Print and fill out the National Voter Registration Form.
- Box 6 - ID Number: When submitting your application by mail in Nebraska, you are required to provide your Nebraska driver’s license or state ID number. If you do not have a Nebraska-issued ID, you are required to provide the last four digits of your Social Security number.
- Box 7 - Choice of Party: You are required to register with a party to participate in Nebraska partisan primary elections. You should register with the party whose primary you would like to vote in. If you do not register with a party, you may select a party preference at primary elections and receive partisan ballots for Senate and House congressional races.
- Box 8 - Race or Ethnic Group: Leave blank. This information is not required.

- If you are registering to vote for the first time in your jurisdiction and are mailing this registration application, federal law requires you to show proof of identification the first time you vote. Proof of identification includes:

Can I register to vote on Election Day?
Nebraska does not offer registration on Election Day.
Exception: If you were not yet registered and requested an early voting ballot from your local election office before the third Friday before the election, you may return a voter registration form provided with your early voting ballot on Election Day.

Can I register to vote before I turn 18?
You can register to vote in Nebraska before you turn 18 if you:
- are at least 17 years old and will be 18 years old by the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of the current year
- are a citizen of the United States
- are a resident of Nebraska and the county where you are registering
- are not convicted of a felony and currently serving a sentence, either in Nebraska or another state or in federal court (your voting rights are restored upon completing your sentence, including any probation or parole term)
- have not been found by a court to be mentally incompetent

You can complete a voter registration application in person at your county election office or at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) when applying for or renewing your driver's license in Nebraska.
You can also register in person at the following public agencies at the time of application, review, or change of address in connection with public programs:

Can I submit a voter registration application online before I turn 18?
Yes, you can register online on the Nebraska Secretary of State, Elections Division website.
To register using the Nebraska online voter registration system, you are required to provide ONE of the following ID numbers:
- Nebraska driver’s license
- Nebraska state-issued ID card
If you don’t have a Nebraska-issued ID, you can still submit a voter registration application by mail or in person.

When submitting your application by mail in Nebraska, you are required to provide your Nebraska driver’s license or state ID number. If you do not have a Nebraska-issued ID, you are required to provide the last four digits of your Social Security number.
If you are registering to vote for the first time in Nebraska and you mail your registration application, you must provide a copy of proof of identity so that you avoid delays with your registration. Acceptable forms include:
- current and valid photo ID
- utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that is dated within 60 days immediately before submitting your application and shows the same name and residence address on your voter registration form
How do I vote if I'm in the military or live overseas?
Active-duty military, their families, and overseas citizens can register to vote and request their absentee ballot using the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA). The FPCA can be returned to your election official by email, fax, or mail. Please contact your local election office for more information about delivery and return methods, including email and fax. You can also learn more about the FPCA by visiting the Nebraska Secretary of State, Elections Division’s website for military voters and overseas voters.
- Fill out the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA), or download a copy. Your local election office may have questions, so please provide an email address or phone number where they can reach you.
- Send the application to your local election office.
- It is never too early to submit an FPCA! Please do so as soon as possible.
- Please fill out and send back your ballot as soon as you receive it.
- States begin mailing absentee ballots at least 45 days before Election Day. If you haven't received your ballot by 30 days before Election Day, contact your local election office.
If after submitting your FPCA, your ballot does not arrive, contact your local election office first. Then:
- You can still vote using the Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot (FWAB). Print, sign, and mail your FWAB to your local election office.
- If you mail a FWAB and then receive your regular absentee ballot, you should complete and mail your absentee ballot also. Election officials will ensure that only one ballot is counted.
